Seventh Chinna Shodha Yatra
Date: 21-23 June 2013
Location: Palakonda, Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh.
Start: The Yatra commences on 21 Jun 2013 from Palakonda at 10 AM
Ends: At Veeraghattam on Sunday, 23 June 2013 at 3 PM.
Night Halts: Pedarama and Manpuram villages
Total distance: 51 km.

Objectives:
• Observe the bio-diversity and its changes over the route
• Observe the livelihood practices of Villagers.
• Understand the harmony among the villagers and the nature.
• Interact with villagers and learn their traditional knowledge. Document
it.
• Identify creative people in the village and document their knowledge.
• Felicitate elders above 90 years at their door step.
• Understand the villagers’ perspective on Development.
• Observe the resource availability and their utilization including value
addition etc.
• Assess the self reliance practices.
• Talk to children, share your knowledge and inspire them with your
achievements.
• Assess the aspirations of village youth and their parents
• Identify technology gaps and see the appropriateness of the tools and
equipment being used by the villagers.
• Study the crop pattern and examine their suitability to the environment,
people’s needs and its sustenance.
• Observe their food habits, health practices.
• Traditional practices in treatment to animals.
• Forest management and ownership of lands by tribal.
Participation
• Participation in 7th Chinna Shodha Yatra is voluntary and there is no fee
for registration.
• College students – boys and girls are welcome to participate in the Shodha
Yatra.
• Any citizen-male or female, boy or girl, who understands the mission of NIF
and honeybee may participate in the Yatra. Visit www.nifindia.org and
www.pallesrujana.org before volunteering to participate in the yatra.
• All participants should be physically fit to walk around 50 km over three
days.
• Expenses for reaching the starting point and returning back from the
termination point should be borne by the participants.
• Food expenses will be shared equally by the yatris.
• Yatra discipline needs to be strictly followed.
How to Reach Palakonda
By Train
From Secunderabad 4-5 trains are available daily to Srikakulam Road.
(Railway code CHE)Preferably book in Falaknuma Express on 20 Jun
which starts from Secunderabad @ 4 PM and reaches Srikakualam
Road on 21 Jun at 6 AM. Other trains are also available but reach at
different times.
Srikakulam Road railway station is located in Amdalavalasa in an and
around 12 km from Srikakulam city.
One can also travel to Visakhapatnam and take a non-stop bus from
bus station to Srikakulam which takes 2 hours. Frequency is every 20-
30 minutes. From Srikakulam bus station reach Srikaulam Road
Railway Station (Amdalavalasa) to join the other yatris. From
Srikakulam Road all yatris will move together.
In case one wants to join the yatra directly at Palakonda, take a bus
from Srikaulam Road Railway Station (Amdalavalasa) or Srikakulam
Bus stand. 30 Km is the distance. Please contact the coordinators on
arrival at Palakonda. This is not recommended as they miss the
orientation and Unlearning session, which we feel is a prerequisite to
benefit from the yatra.
By Bus
From Hyderabad and other destinations there are buses plying to
Srikakulam. From Srikakulam bus station reach Srikakulam Road
railway station to join the other Yatris.
Return Journey
By Train
From Veeraghattam-the terminating point, Srikaulam is max 3
hours away by road.
Reservation from Srikakulam Road railway Station to your
destination any time after 7 PM on 23 June 2013.
Or
Vizianagarm is max 4 hours by road. One has to change bus at
Parvathipuram. Frequency of buses is every 30 minutes
Reservation from Vizianagaram after 8 PM on 23 June 2013 is fine.
By Bus
Buses to all destinations are available from Srikakulam. Book by
bus any time after 7 PM on 23 Jun 2013.
Buses from Vizianagaram available to all destinations via
Visakhapatnam. Book any after 8 PM on 23 Jun 2013.

Participation is limited minimum 20 and maximum 40. If more
participants register, Coordinator will select the final list. Registration
does not automatically entitle participation in the Yatra. Confirmation
from the Coordinator is essential. Should the registered participants be
less than 20 the yatra may get deferred.

Detailed programme will be available on www.pallesrujana.org by
15 June 2013. It will also be mailed to the registered participants
directly.
This broad programme is provided to enable the yatri to make their
reservations suiting them.
Other Information
•Food will be centrally organized. Each participant has to contribute for
the food. Tentatively an amount of Rs 300 per head may be deposited by
each participant with one of the Volunteers from the participants on 21
June on arrival at Srikakulam Rly stn.
•Accounts will be settled by the volunteer before dispersal.
•During the Yatra, we will be felicitating the old and deserving villagers
with shawls and other useful items. Voluntary contributions
from participants are welcome for this purpose. You are welcome to bring
shawls and other items.
•Interaction with School children will be a major activity during the yatra.
Prepare to organize games, idea competitions, bio-diversity competitions
and gifts for the same could be contributed by the participants. You can
bring Sketch pens, pencils, pens, stationery and toys for kids.
•Recipe competitions for the women of the villages will be conducted.
•Each participant is kindly expected to do the following:
 Maintain a positive attitude and shift to learning mode.
 Keep active and participate whole heartedly.
 Interact with other participants extensively.
 Talk to villagers with respect and learn from them.
 Impressions to be shared everyday and more on the last day.
 A detailed report on your impressions with your willingness to

Useful Information
Kindly refer below for some important instructions/information for the Shodha
Yatra:
• Travel light and bring only as much luggage, which you can handle by yourself.
• Sleeping gear has to be brought by the participant as it will not be provided
• Most of the route mobile connection is not available.
• Only those who will be able to endure the extensive walking should come and
anyone with any health problems should not come.
• It is expected that during the Shodha Yatra, the participants will not walk with
their friends/ known people, the objective of this walk is to get to know other
people and learn from them.
• No waste material like food packets/ wrappers/polythene is to be littered in the
jungles, villages or the places where we rest/sleep. Participants are expected to
dispose such material, if in possession at the designated place or carry back for
disposal later.
• Closed bathroom/washroom facility is not available.
• Sometimes due to unforeseen reasons, food may be delayed. Kindly bear all this
in mind.
What to carry

o Torch light with spare batteries

o Bed sheets (2). Pillow(Only desirable)
o A Mug
o Water bottle
o Cap
o Suitable foot wear – avoid new shoes

o Medicines, if you are using any
o One bag per participant will be carried separately in a logistic
vehicle.
o No plastics please.
If we keep everything aforesaid in mind, Chinna Shodha Yatra
would be a good learning experience for all. You will surely
experience the excitement of living with minimal resources and
facilities.
This yatra is being organised by PalleSrujana – a voluntary
organisation based in Hyderabad.
